MISSING. SEVENTEEN WOMEN AND GIRLS. Australian Tress Alsn.—United Service SYDNEY, Jan. 9. Lately an epidemic of disappearances of women and girls has been reported to the Sydney police. Two were reported missing to-day, brimring the total of such cases since November -I tli to 17. SUSPECTED THIEF SHOT DEAD. MELBOURNE; Jan. 9. At Leitcliville, near Bendigo, this morning, a resident noticed an unknown man in a shop. He secured assistance and went hack and called tho man, who was leaving the shop without hoots. 'Pile man ignored the challenge, and was shot dead, by the resident’s companion, with a shotgun. A swag whs found a little way off.
