MINISTER’S STATEMENT. WORKS TO BE EXPEDITED. Bv Telegraph.—Special to Guardian) WELLINGTON, Jan. 9. The Government’s decision to actively proceed with the linking up of the important main lines of the Dominion has made definite progress, said the Minister of Public Works (Hon E. A. Ransom). The number of men on the Stratford Main Trunk Railway has l>een increased at both ends, he said, and more men are being placed on the Napier-Wairoa section; while the employees have been increased in numbers, and there will lie a further extension in this direction. ‘As it is important to complete the surveys on the gap in the South Island Main Trunk line,” continued the Minister, “a commencement has already been made on this work. All the field work has been done on the Wai-roa-Gisborne section of the Napier-Gis-liorne line. The survey work which is needed for the continuation of the Westport-Inangahua Line is to he put in hand shortly. As for the Stratford Main Trunk Railway,” concluded the Minister, “all this has been completely surveyed, and all that is necessary is to expedite the progress ot the work in the extremely difficult country in which the construction workers are now engaged.”
