CHANNEL TUNNEL
MILITARY ASPECT. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, Jan. 7. The Times Paris correspondent stales that at. a stroke of the pen England can become the* western terminus of tho entire .European rail system, if French economists envisage the consequences of tho Channel Tunnel. They consider that Britain overestimates the military aspect. Admittedly tin; Committee of Imperial Defence rightly held that the tunnel held elements of danger, but this comparative drawback should not be allowed to outweigh tin* incalculable economic benefits by which Britain stands Lo gain most.
It- is estimated bore that Britain in a few years will recover from the tunnel’s earnings the entire cost ot defending the Dover approaches. The French' share of the necessary capital would be quickly forthcoming. Engineers are convinced that the ddficuliy of disposing of waste materia! can he surmounted by loi'cing it through 'critical borings into the Channel. This method has proved practicable on a smaller scale.
