WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE
'TUESDAY, JANUARY Bth. A meeting of the Committee of the above League was held at the County Chambers at 7.33 o’clock last evening. Present: Dr Teichelniann (President), Messrs T. AV. Duff, D. J. 1 Evans, W. E. Richards, AV. Jeffries, AAL J. Butler, and J. AV. Morris (lion. sec.). Apology was made for the absence of Air AA r . Wilson. The minutes of tlie previous meetin ; were confirmed. The outward correspondence was approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Sullivan Bros., AA’ehoka, forwarding £3 3s towards cost of screen advertising.—Received with thanks. From Southland League, forwarding minutes of proceedings for November and December.—Received with thanks. From Canterbury' Progress League, similar. —Received with thanks. From same, giving particulars of touring train traversing the South Island railway system, and spending March 2nd at Hokitika.—-Received. From J. O’Brien, ALP., notifying approaching visit- of Minister of Alines. —Received with thanks. From Professor Turner, Otago University, regarding reports on minerals of South AVestland.—Received and referred to Air AV. AVilson.
GENERAL. Regarding -the visit of the touring train it was stated Go commercial and general visitors, mainly fromh Canterbury, would reach here on Saturday, March 2, about 8 a.m. and depart Sunday morning by train at 4 a.m. It was suggested the morning be spent in visiting tlie dredge, forestry plantation and adjacent sawmills (Ruatapu and Kanieri). lor the afternoon it was proposed to invite the visitors to the Fire Brigades Competition which would be proceeding on Cass Square. For the evening Dr Tcicheliii a nil would kindly give his illustrated lantern lecture on the Beauties of AVestland. and that subsequently the visitors would be entertained by the League and local bodies. This programme was approved and is to he submitted to the Canterbury Progress League. Regarding the visit of the Minister of Alines at an early date it "as agreed tho League should wait on Air Veiteh and bring forward the following matters :—Cheaper freight on root crops for feed liv rail from Cantcu uiy; as railway construction is not being undertaken in this district. Government he asked to concentrate mi unproved roads, and that the widening and improving of the main south road now carrying so much . stock and freight for export from the railhead, he specially taken in hand; that an 'officer of the Publicity Department be sent to AVestland for the purpose of planning an advertising campaign to further the outside knowledge and interest in AVestland as a tourist and holiday resort, and that the Tourist Department assist in the same diieetion, giving the widest publicity t - AA T es'tlnnd’s natural attractions. These matters will be supplementary to those brought forward by the local bodies. It was decided to supply the Hca Committee directing the visit of tlie Fire Brigade teams with a supply M AVestland booklets advertising the district, for the information of the visitors. The meeting rose at 8.20 pun.
