A new type of machine has been added to the serdies- of British light aeroplanes, it marks an interesting development in the production of British aircliaft. The machine has been designed by Mr Simmomls, who was formerly on .the technical staff of constructors of the well-known subermarine Southhampton flying boats, and has been named the Simmonds-Spar-tan.
The whole of the first hatch of 12 machines has been ordered, and the :,r.st machine will he sent to America on Thursday. Australia has ordered tlirot r or private owners, and one is going n South Africa. Afore are hooked for the United States, and the remainder are for Home purchasers. The main claim for the new machine is in the method of making all wings interchangeable, and also such parts as ailerons, elevators, rudder, the tailpiece, fin, and flying wires. The basis of this construction is the use of symmetrical wing sections, and. nlIbough it lias always been considered mat they have certain disadvantages compared with the more usual wing
with a different, chamber top and bottom. the designer of the Spartan claims that the particular section he has e volved compares well with tin-sc used' on other light aircraft. The engine is a-Cirrus Mark Third, whhh is a development of a typo already widely circulated over the world. The maximum speed is stated to he 103 miles an hour.
