THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

A Land I’oijcy. There must, lie closer settlement of developed Innds, and a land policy that only opened up the baek'docks and did not, put to more economic use land near railways and good roads, would be dangerously one-sided. The Minister is instructing his officers to funish a report of all such suitable land available, and on this information he will base proposals for acquiring estates for closer settlement. Not only will t.lm 'future of the Government largely depend upon what Mr Forbes and his colleagues do with their opportunity to promote land settlement, but the prosperity of the whole country will bo greatly affected.
