A Momentous Step. 7 Amid the turmoil of conflicting world interests very 7 little public attention has been given of late to China. Yet the treaty signed between China and Britain a lew day r s ago is an epoch-making event which may inaugurate an entirely new • era in the relations between Last and Most. In strict accordance with Britain’s declared intention of readjusting the “unequal” treaties as soon as a stable government could maintain itself in China, our Foreign Office has agreed to abrogate all existing treaties limiting China’s right to levy duties or deal with her Customs t<u iff as she may think fit; and a similar renunciation is expected from the oversea Dominions.
