AUCKLAND'S BIRTH RATK. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Jan. 2. A reinarkable drop in Auckland’s birth rate occurred last year. The toal numlxjr of birlis, 3197, was the lowest for ten years, and was 28.‘i fewer than in 1927, and 38-5 less than in 15)20, the record birth year. The economic consideration, due to the slum]) conditions prevailing during the past two years, is advanced as the reason for the decrease in the number of marriages in 1027 and 1928. Marriages performed before the registrar totalled '19(5 last year, compared with -101 in the previous year, an increase of two. Deaths totalled 1775 last year, a decrease of 53 over the figures for 1027. INCREASE IN DEATHS. WELLINGTON, Jan. 1. A marked increase in the deaths in the Wellington district as compared with 1927 is shown bv the figures for the year ended on Monday. Ther are increases also in the number < births and marriages.
