FRENCH POLITICS
PR EMI EPS’ INTENTIONS. (United Press Association—By Electric '1 elegraph—Copyright). PARTS, Dec. 31. The political situation is easier] as the Chamber,by 450 votes to 10, and the Senate, by 274 voces to IG, passed the Budget and ended the session. The iikolihood of a Cabinet crisis may thus; bo eliminated, though Al. Poincare is expected to make a speech explaining Cabinet’s policy on January 10th. when he will demand a vote of confidence.
The Paris correspondent of the “Daily Express” understands that Al. Poincare intends to be a candidate in the next President election. Yesterday’s Cabinet meeting only evolved a eoinpronii.se. An opportunity will Ik? given to the Chamber in the middle of January to declare itself. Tf the Premier considers that his confidence majority is insufficient lie will definitely retire.
The Paris correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph’ narrates an incident which throws light on AT. Poincare’s attitude. The first draft communique after the Cabinet meeting did not mention a decision to resign. Al Poincare insisted on redrafting it. even again threatening to give up office if what occurred was not disclosed to the public.
There is no doubt that the country is emphatic in demanding that Al. Poincare should remain in office, whatever Parliament and some members of Cabinet think. The Premier has not lost any prestige in the country, which would he unable to understand his withdrawal when the reparations negotiations arc beginning, nor can the “Gazette d’France” scandal be left out of account. The Press is unanimous that a worse moment for a Cabinet crisis could scarcely be imagined. Nevertheless. Al. Poincare’s nttP’Me can onlv lie regarded as showing that be is tired of office, for many reasons, hut chiefly because lie is unhappy with the Radicals’ opposition.
