RESCUE AT NEW BRIGHTON

The following letter appeared in the Christchurch “ Sun ” last week. The reference to F. Schroder refers to a son of Mr and Mrs Schroder, of Jollie Street, Hokitika:— Sir, —The reports in the papers give all credit to the Life-Saving Club for Sunday’s rescue at Brighton, when in reality it actually was carried out by two casual bathers, Messrs C. Marshall and F. Schroder, both of the Railway 'Department, Christchurch. A boy staggered out of the surf in a semi-ex-Jiausted condition and informed the two named above that a boy and a girl were in difficulties, and that he was too exhausted to go out again. The two lads, after seeing that word was Bent to the Life-Saving Club, at once plunged into the surf and made out .towards the unfortunate couple who

.were almost exhausted. The rescuers had no knowledge of life-saving, .but they managed toehold the girl and the boy up and drag them towards shallow water. The members of the Life-Sav-ing Club did not have to go out 'of their depth, while the two lads were pulled under several times. I am not trying to throw discredit upon the members of the Life-Saving Club, as they performed very important work in the restorative treatment. When the rescued were carried out of the suttf the two boys walked modestly away and the club got all the honours. I can vouch for the correctness of this, as I was an eye-witness to. all that happened, and would like to see credit go where credit is due.—l am, Ct °'’ ARTHUR BROOKS.
