Visitors to Hokitika on Now Year's Kve ineludccl Miss Ellon Melville and Mrs W. F. Tracy. Miss Melville, who is a practising; solicitor, a member of the Auckland City Council and president of the N.Z. Libraries’ Association, was the official Reform candidate for Rusk ill at the recent general election. She is without doubt the best-known woman in public life in New Zealand, and has for many years past been one of the most consistent supporters ol the modern woman movement. lining well-known in Australia and England in this connection. Her interest in Hokitika is largely owing to the fact that her mother, formerly Miss Eliza C'olls. was a resident of this town in the early seventies, when she vas closely connected w.tii the Presbyterian Church under the ministry ol t''r. I’em "William Clow. Mrs Tracy, with whom Miss Melville has been staying at Arthur’s Pass is the wife of Mr \Y. E. Tracy, the well-known Christchurch solicitor. She is better known under the penname of Mona Tracy. Her hooks lor children, “Rifle and Tomahawk” and “Lawless Hays” two stories of adventure in New Zealand’s early days, were both best sellers this Xmas, while her more serious work includes a constant output of short stories, articles and verse.
