THE A USTHA LI AN ELEVEN
LONDON PRESS COMMENTS
LONDON. Dec. 27
There are indications of keenest interest in the third tesl. The press generally is discussing the changes in the Australian team, and prospects. The ‘‘Daily Telegraph” anticipates that the England eleven will meet with a stiffer proposition at- Melbourne than hitherto. The introduction of Oxenhani and A’Bockett means a formidable combination of bowlers and it needs only a. little luck, which has notyet come to Australia, which may make the struggle very cron. While it would he pleasant to win the rubber with two games in hand, there will he many here who would like to see our opponents make a hold hid for victory in this match.
The “Morning Post” says the Austialian eleven is perhaps a stronger side than that played in Sydney, though Ponsford will be sorely missed at Melbourne, where he N scored his principal triumphs. England would have been cheaply rid of Ponsford on his favourite pitch foi anything under a hundred. The most significant change is the dropping of Ironmonger and the requisition of Oxenham to strengthen the attack. He undoubtedly is a great bowler on his day. He has plenty of spin, varies his attack, and possesses a oiicket brain. “Sporting Life” regards the Australian test team as stronger than that at lirisbano or Sydney. There is no question that the attack has been strengthened. AUSTRALIAN CAPTAIN. MELBOURNE, Dec. 28. Ryder has been appointed captain of the Australian eleven, and Wood Hi II vice-captain. ENGLISH TEAM THE SAME. SYDNEY; Doc. 28. Although the English team is not formally announced until to-morrow, it is understood the team will he the same as that which, won the second test. HISTORICAL EXHIBITS. LONDON, Dec. 28. A wonderful collection of historical exhibits at the Schoolboys’ Own Exhibition at Westminster, includes the hall with which Tate had a big share in winning the 1926 Test and the hat with which Ponsford made the world’s record score.
