At.the annual farm labour auction held at Steienne, in accordance with ancient custom, illustrated forcibly France’s labour shortage. Only dogged farm labourers and shepherds were put on the block and there were eight bidders for every one offered. Girl shepherds hardly over 13, brought three thousand francs each for a year’s labour, plus two new dresses. Adult farm hands brought from four thousand to five thousand francs with extra inducements.

A GENEROUS RESPONSE. LONDON, Dec. 27. 1 Tb.e. Prince of Wales’’ postbag at York House was one of tho biggest on record to-day, ns the remit of his broadcast appeal on behalf of the min- : ers. Letters came from all classes. Many describe how immediately tho Prince had spoken, a hat was handed round and a modest ten shillings and upwards was sent to the Mansion House where over a thousand contributions were received by the first post. The Prince spent a good deal of Christmas Day composing the appeal, which was only finished just before he went to the microphone. The fund is now about three hundred and fifty thousand apart from the Government’s contributions. MINERS KILLED: CAPETOWN, Dec. 27. Two mjners. wore killed and twentyone injured in an overwinding accident at Robinson Deep to-day. A cage crashed into a platform at the top headgear, where a safety device held it until help came.
