THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Closer Land Settlement. Closer land settlement is regarded by a recent visitor to New Zealand as absolutely necessary for tlie further progress of the Dominion. He expressed the opinion that only good land should "bo opened up for settlement, as tne big back-country properties were not suitable for cutting up. “Thebe is a great deal of first-class land, particularly in the North Island, which is going back into a wild stale simply for lack of cultivation, and it should he acquired for closer settlement before it is too late,” be said. > This should lie done without delay, as every year this land was going back more, and if neglected for much longer it would be too late lo do much good with it.—Lyttleton Times. . • • ■’ d ■K '■
