WESTLAND RACING CLUB

MIDSUMMER MEETING

SECOND DAY RESULTS

The Westland Racing Club concluded its mid-summer meeting yesterday in fine but cloudy weather. The course was again in capital order, and the general arrangements as complete as the previous day. There was, however, a considerable drop in the attendance, the gate receipts for the two days showing a falling off in value of £55. The drop in the attendance also affected speculation, the totalisator figures for the day amounting to £5735 as against £7222} Ifor the, second day last year and the total for the two days was £12,407, as against £15,401) for last year’s meeting, a decrease of £2,994. After the race ?or the Hokitika Handicap, the whip presented by Mr J. W. Thomson, of East Oxford, was presented by Mr F. McGregor to the rider of Lnoe (C'oveny).

The Stipendiary' Steward caused an enquiry by the Judicial Committee, the rider of Moorland being asked to explain the running of the previous and that day in the County Handicap. The rider stated the gallop on Wednesday did the horse good and he had a better race yesterday'. The previous day the horse did not get going till the back of the course was reached, and there was too much leeway' to make up. Yesterday, the horse went off with the field .and kept there, doing all it was asked. Mr Simpson (owner) said he was satisfied the horse did its best on Wednesday and suffered from sorer ness, following on an injury at Westport .wharf. The Stewards discussed the subject and resolved that while viewing the running of the horse with suspicion there was no direct evidence of inconsistency and the placing was not altered.

Subsequently, Walsh, rider of Gaslight in the same race, was brought before the Committee in respect to an alleged cross going out of the straight affecting Moorland. After consideration the Committee decided to give a caution to Walsh.
