The Minister of Fducalion (the lion H. Atniore) was accorded a civic reception last evening.

Owing to the large numhor attending. the gathering was removed from the Municipal Cham,hers to the church steps adjoining. The sneakers included representatives of all the local bodies and exMa yors.

Befercnce was made to the tact that .Mr Atniore was the first, native-born Nelson member to attain Cabinet rank. The .Minister said he would not triufl. to party. Party politics had not obtained a hold on him. Me could assure his audience that the men in power to-day Were not out lor party politics, but to guide New Zealand along the path of progress. Referring to the Nelson railway, lie emphasised the fact that the losses on ihc railways were not made on the main lines, hut'on the small branch lines some ol which would have to lie strapped, as they were being super .soded by motor tradie. On this point he mentioned that the heavy taxation of motor vehicles would ihc lightened in the future. While looking a ltd lhe interests of his electorate, he realised that his duty was to serve New Zealand as a whole.

Air Atniore was loudly cheered on concluding.
