Archdeacon George Mncimirruy, who on Saturday celebrated ilio fiftieth anniversary of his ordination as a priest of the. Church of England, was the guest of honour at a large social gathering in the evening. On tlvchnlf of the clergy, old parishioners and friends generally, Archbishop Averill presented him with two line etchings of St Mary’s Cathedral (of which he was formerly vicar) and a cheque lor two hundred guineas.

The Secretary of the General Post Office has received the following navigation warning broadcast irom Sydney 'Radio:—

10.40 p.ni. December 22 Master of Sonoma reports breakers extending due east and west, about 500 feet long, were sighted at midday oil December 20 in lat. 30, of smith, long. 158. 10 oast. TWO MEN DROWNED

Two unmarried men, Vivian .Maurice Donaldson, of Lower Matakana, aged twenty-six, and Labi Brown, aged nineteen, of Pakiri, were drowned oil Leigh to-day. They wen' in a small new craft with Trevor Taylor, aged ninete.cn, who was saved after swimming half a mile. The accident occurred in an attempt to turn the boat. Taylor says the last lie saw ol bis companions was when they were clinging to the upturned boat.

The estate and effects of the late Andrew Clarke Ciuigboy, of the firm of Smith and Oaughey, Ltd., has been sworn for purposes of probate as being under value of £250.000. 4he great bulk of the estate is assigned to members of the family. Four public benefactions of £SOO each are made to the Methodist Church at I’ortaferrv, County Down, Ireland, to the Y.Af.C.A. and Y.W.C.A., of Auckland; and the .Methodist Orphanage, Auckland.

Kul)-Inspertor M’C'arthy said accused had hcen keeping company with a young woman in New Lynn who was souk* years his senior, hut the girl decided to end the affair as Grundy’s conduct had been so reprehensible. The young man took his father's- revolver, loaded it, and went round to a clergyman’s house where the girl was, and demanded her. The police were, communicated with and when a constable arrived, Grundy was taking the revolver from his pocket. A remand was granted until Friday.

CHILI) DROWNED. WELLINGTON, Dee. 24

An inquest was held to-day on Rue Vera Saul, aged 2 years and 3 monthc, who was drowned on Potonc beach on Saturday.

'the evidence of the mother and a sister, Joan, aged 7, showed that the. child was paddling with Joan in shallow water and fell face downwards. They were alone, and Joan lifted the child and carried her home. A doctor certified to using artificial respiration for half an hour without result. Death as due to drowning. The Coroner returned a verdict accordingly, stating that no blame, was attachable to anyone.

HALL BURNT DOWN

EKETAHUNA, December 24

The Public Hall at Alfredton, together with the contents, was totally destroyed by fire last night. The origin is a mystery. A Christmas tree was hold on Saturday night, and since then the building has not been used. It was recently, remodelled, and the loss to the district is rather severe.

DAMAGE AT NELSON. NELSON, December 25

Rout’s Puddings," containing the offices of .M. Rout and Son, the Sun Insurance Company, and the Permanent Building Society on the ground floor, and the Shakespeare Tearooms upstairs were practically destroyed bv fire on Saturday evening. Rout’s Buildings were insured for £IOO9 and the tearoom furniture for £*loo in the Sun office.
