The other day a. Blenheim confectioner imported from Wellington an electric ice cream refrigerator of an elaborate make, it was necessary, in using the machine, says the “Marlborough Express,” to fill certain tubes and reservoirs with brine of a particular specific gravity, and to ensure that the Blenheimite made no’mistake in this regard the Wellington agents prepared the brine, soldered it up in benzine tins, packed' the tins in their original benzine cases, and shipped them to Blenheim. When the machine was erected the brine was brought from the wharf and one of the cases opened, when it was found that someone, in ‘Wellington or in Blenheim, evidently concluding that the tins contained motor spirit, had punched a couple of holes in one tin, drained off the contents, and then replaced the empty tin in tho ease. Enquiries are now being made for a motorist suffering from chronic carburettor trouble.

On it sat the mother bird, with five hungry chicks under her. The owner of the garden bad been feeding the bird for some time and with a worm in Ins lingers he held it out to the sitting bird, which took it from him with its beak, without moving from the nest. The writer and another were close by, not ifour feet distant, hut the bird showed no alarm whatever, and in its nest made a pretty picture of trusting bird life.

Christmas Eve. after a fine Sunday, was ushered in with glorious weather. Shoppers were early astir, and throughout the day . and night there was a steady stream of customers to the various shops, who appear to have had a very satisfactory turnover: In the evening the streets bore a very animated appearance, the younger people having a night out. The toy shops and soft refreshment premises appeared crowded throughout the evening, while Revel I Street itself held one of the largest crowds for quite a long time, tho very line night having assisted in attracting the crowd out of doors. There was a large number of country people in town for the day and evening, and the array of motor cars in the parking places m Weld Street, and elsewhere showed how extensive this mode of travel has been availed of by local people. The streets continued to be full of people till a late hour. There were occasional largo crackers exploded, and the sounds of much merriment, but the general demeanour even in the late hours was of a very orderly description. After midnight the Municipal Band paraded tho town in a motor lorry playing carols, continuing their music until nearly breakfast time, their music sounding very attractive in the quiet hours. At St. Mary’s Church there was a large attendance at Midnight Mass.
