The Westland Racing Club was favoured with a perfect day yesterday for the first day of the summer meeting. The heavy rain of the previous, day was not noticeable on the course which was in capital order. The altered appointments, following the disastrous fire of a few months ago, won the general approval of patrons, the alterations made proving of decided utility, though the grandstand was somewhat overtaxed. .There was a large attendance the gate receipts being a record, and the whole of the arrangements were very complete and the races were rim olf promptly on time throughout. Unfortunately there was a plethora of sera tellings and the fields were not large, hut. the racing was interesting. The dividends were small throughout, in the last race Para returning supporters the best one of the day. Mr 11. Lynch and his stall' handled C 7272 for (.lie day as against £8179 on the first day of last year a drop of £907. The gate receipts wore £396, an increase of £ll. The Municipal Band was present and played an attractive musical programme. After the race for the W est la ml Clip, the President (Mr W. E. Williams) said they had to thank their old friend and member,. Mr R. Adamson, for a handsome silver cup donated to the winner and Mr W. Newman ol a whip for the successful jockey (Campbell) Mr Williams proceeded In thank those present for the generous support that (lav following the disastrous fire in which their appointments had suffered so severely a short lew months before. Ho had to thank all for their practical sympathy, resulting in the acquisition of a large number of new members. lie would ask Mr Adamson to present the Cup to Mr King on behalf of the owner Mr IMiirnl.
Mr Adamson briefly asked acceptance of I he Cup' congratulating owner, trainer and jockey on their success. Mr King asknowlodged the receipt of the Cup and complimented the management on their success!ul carrying on of the sport. Mr Williams then asked Airs Newman to present the Whin donated by her husband, Mr W. Newman, mentioning that tlie lady was a daughter of a. former well-known sport of Westport, tlie late Hon. .1. Colvin, whose colours had graced many a course over many years.
Mrs Newman presented the Whip to the jockey (Campbell) complimenting him on his success. Hearty applaud ed. Concluded the ceremony. After the last race the Stipendiary Steward (Mr Mcl<ean) called the ridei of Moorland (Orange) before the Judicial Committee to explain his ruling in the event. Thu owner was also, called and lie stated he was satisfied wdl) the manner in which he had been ridden. He explained the horse was sore as a result of fall at Westport, where they had considerable difficulty in loadiu the horse.' The Judicial Committee took no action. Wharfedale and Bright Spear went away in the lead, hut after a quarter of a mile Wliarledalo gave way and Aften Ten came away to lead home and win hv length from Bright -Spear, Wharledalc three lengtbrs away third. Time 1.24. Tote £596A. TASMAN HANDICAP HURDLES, of £10!). V.V miles. (1) Erin-go-Bragh (9.12) 1 (2) .Piccaninny (9.3) 2 (4) Gay Gauntlet (9.G) 3 Also started.—Steel Bar (9.5). Erin-go-Bragh led from Clay Gauntlet the first time round. Then Piccaninny came fast and took the. lead for a furlong, Erin-go-Bragh then going tc tin front and continuing to win comfortably by two lengths, the other two eight lengths away. Atone played up at the barrier, bolding up the start for several minutes and ultimately failed to go away with the field. Para led past the'stand with Pangolin next and 'Bank Draft. Soon Pangolin went past Para who dropped away and Smithereens came with a .run hut could not make an impression on the leader who won bj a length with Gold Mint', two length* away third and Triop a head Ire-hind fourth. (2) Single Spear (8.2) 1 (3) Anthonie (7.13) (8) King Cheops (8.9) 3 Also started.—Skyquest (9.4), Tip Tree (8.12), Silver Tray (8.(10), Note (8.5), Grey fin eh 48. G). Fair Go (8.1). From a good start Anthonie led from Single Spear. There was no alteration"’till the straight was entered when the field bunched. Single Spear winning from Anthonie by three-quarters of a length with King Cheops third a length away and Silver Tray a head away fourth. Time I.lo' 3-5. Tote £11645

Some Lad went out from the start leading from Dancer and John Dix. ’Chore, was no alteration throughout and Some Dad won easily by three lengths, John Dix two lengths away third. Time 1.30 1-5. 'Cole £llsll. ELECTRIC HANDICAP, of (j8l). G furlongs. (11 Sagittarius (8.0)- 1 (31 Spode (8.0) 2 (21 Rina Mangu (7.13) 3 Only starLers. Sagittarius led throughout and won very easily by three lengths. Rina Mangu two lengths away. Time 1.16 4-5. 'l’otc £OB7I. ' GOLDFIELDS HANDICAP, of £9O. 01 furlo-ngs. (3) Para (7.0) : 1 (2) Celihurn (8.0) 2 (I) Moorland (9.0) 3 Also started.--Gaslight (7.13). From an even start Gaslight and Cal.ibn.ni led the way and held command till the distance where Para came with a fast run and won a good race by half a length. Moorland which made up a lot of ground in the last furlong was third., a length away. Time 1.24 4-5. Tote £1242. SECOND DAY. 'Che weather is overcast for the second dav's races taking place to-day.
