OPERATION'S BEING PUSHED

At Awakiiio, the scene of the new hydro-electric works, the upper bridge was cmiipleted on Thursday. The light railway connecting with the Kurow. branch line is also, finished, and connects with the bridge across which rails are to be laid for the transport of heavy materials to be‘used in the construction of coffer dams. Itvo setsof rails of 2ft gauge will carry cement and rock spoil, the latter' being obtained from tlio Canterbury side of the river.
A Public Works locomotive for use on the' light railway between' Kurow arid Awakino was brought into' use immediately on its arrival this week, and eleven truck loads of heavy sheath pilling were delivered at the bridge-head, tegethjor with steam hammers and other heavy material.
Following the holidays, a beginning is to lie made on the lower bridge, about 100 yards below the new bridge. Huge bins for mixing cement aro in process' of construction on the Otago side, and the excavation of surplus soil in preparation for the dam is occupying several gangs. Permanent housing of employees on what eventually will be the south bank of a lake is rapidly proceeding; and to.date 10 lints each to house two men, have been erected.
