A DAILY MESSAGE

“DO YOU ‘DO’ OR ONLY CACKLE?” I hi: cackle ol a lien and tin * laying of an egg are supposed to he terms synonymous. W‘t there are liens that cackle when they do not lay. Not a nice habit, and one not approved by the more dependable liens who make no announcements until the goods are actually delivered. Although the hen that cackles when she docs not lay is an exception, still the lolly ol an occasional fussy shirker lavs all other hens under suspicion. I his explains why the human doubter asks, when he hears the cackle of a hen: " lias she been laying or is she only lying F” How many humans there are who are just like that hen ! folk who make much ado about nothing ! it you have had much to do with committees, you will lie familial' with I hem. -Most committees are made up of the workers, who “ do,” and do noL talk, mid t.ln* shirkers, who “do not.” and do talk. The former waul no credit for anything, and are cnlitled to the credit of everything. The latter want credit for everythin;.and are entitled to credit for nothing, for they never do anything—or, at least, they never do anything that

amounts to anything. , Hut they do make a noise, which would lie very misleading il we lailed to remember how like some humaii- : are those hens that cackle though ihcv

may have produced nothing. The other kind arc so busy doing the next thing that has to he done that they have no time to eacklc even when they have completed a thoroughly creditable job. —M. PRESTON STANLEY.
