A very civil it ,■! bio programme lias boon outlined lor tbo entertainment of the visiting fircinon in connection with the meeting of tbo United Fire Brigades’ Association of Xew Zealand. Hokitika is greatly lionored by be in’s selected for such a gathering, which involves the presence here of upwards of -100 firemen for a week or ten days. It is expected the visit will extend from February 23 id. to Alarch Ith., while touring parties are arranging to visit other parts of Westland at the close ol the competitions. The conlerenco which will lie attended by about 1/0 delegates, is to sit in the Town Hall, and will occupy about two days. This is to be. followed by a public outing bat Lake Muliinapua, and three days will be devoted to the competitions, whereat all the crack fire brigade teams of the Dominion will compete. The competitions will lie held on Cass Square, through which a special lead of tinhigh pressure water supply will be laid. I!:.- town is very fortunate in having -o line a field for such a purpose, file ground being all that could he desired for sueli an event. The programme of ontorfainineiit which has li.oen mapp-al out. will require a good deal of detail work to carry it into good effect. The •o-operalion of the. citizens genera 1 will he required, both in financial aid. and as effective com mi I tec workers. In particular the help of the ladies in several of the committees will he indispensible. and their assistance in that respect is to he called for later, as soon as the holidays are disposed of. On previous occasions the town has done itself credit, in catering for an inllux of visitors, and with the experience gained, it should be possible to maintain the reputation of the past. Tt is certainly a very fine opening to advertise the district generally, and send away so many hundreds of people potential advertisers of the district. The outings to tlic country districts should be worth while as indicating the local attractions, not only in scenic value, but for settlement purposes. On that account it will be of value to see as many parties as possible going south, niul so affording an opportunity of gleaning some intimate knowledge of the scope and extent of 'Westland awaiting complete development. It would appear those organising the event have a considerable task before them, tint enthusiasm supported gonedously by tbo public, should help to carry off This large and important event in a manner creditable in every way to the town and district. If a good co-operative spirit is abroad among the people and the success desired will he achieved.
