UNEMPLOYED RELIEF
“GRANT” OR SUBSIDY. (For Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copy right). AUCKLAND, Dec. 19. The three Auckland Labour members of Parliament, Messrs Savage, Parry and Mason, are supporting an appeal made by the Mayor, Mr Baildon, that the £2OOO promised by the Government for-alleviation of the unemployed situation in Auckland, should he given wasgranted, not as a subsidy on a similar amount to bo found hy the City Council. To-day they forwarded the following telegram to the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward: “We were pleased to receive your advice stating that £2OOO would he available to relieve unemployment in Auckland during the Christmas season, hut regrett, however, that about 800 men and their families are disappointed because of the delay caused hy the conditions of the grant. Can you do anything to facilitate matters, and relieve the desperate conditions .existing here?” No reply lias yet been received by the Mayor to the further representation lie made on Tuesday, that the grant should he made. To-day there was a queue of unemployed men outside his office awaiting news.
