Sir Joseph Ward mentioned that there had always been croakers m regard to various railway projects including the Main Trunk and he emphasised that the Government would not be deterred in its project by such statements now. With regard to the Gishorne-Napier railway, some question had been raised as to the route. Naturally those raising The questions were entitled to consideration. There was a difference of L'tiOO.GOO between the route's, and official representations wore quite clear that the shorter route which would save £(>00,000. would meet the whole requirements. Before definitely deciding the matter, however. full reports would he obtained. If results could he obtained by saving CGOO.(VK) the Government would most unhesitatingly adopt that course.
