TO BE PUT IN HAND. GOVERNMENT POLICY TO BE CARRIED OUT. 'By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. Tn an interview this morning. Sir .'Joseph Ward said the Public Works Peparimont has been instructed to arrange for an additional number of men to he put on the railways that had previously been announced as pari, of the general policy of the Government, and to make arrangements to push on with the construction of Aiicklaiid-Taranaki railway, GishonieNapier railway, Tnangahua-Westport railway, and Midland railway to Xel-
odicers of the Department have been advised to put the matters in motion, and to got ready for going right on with these works. Definite instructions had also been given that surveyors wore to be put on without- dehiy. to put in hand the surveying of the South island trunk railway, and it was to he done as expeditiously as possi hie. Sir Joseph Ward mentioned that there had always been croakers m regard to various railway projects including the Main Trunk and he emphasised that the Government would not be deterred in its project by such statements now. With regard to the Gishorne-Napier railway, some question had been raised as to the route. Naturally those raising The questions were entitled to consideration. There was a difference of L'tiOO.GOO between the route's, and official representations wore quite clear that the shorter route which would save £(>00,000. would meet the whole requirements. Before definitely deciding the matter, however. full reports would he obtained. If results could he obtained by saving CGOO.(VK) the Government would most unhesitatingly adopt that course.
