CHINESE CUSTOMS
NEW TARIFF ANNOUNCED. (British Official Wireless.) RUG MY, Dec. 15. Mr G. Eocker-Lampson, Under-S ret ary for Foreign Affairs, in a written reply to a Parliamentary ques Lion, states that, in a Note dated Dec. •Hit. the Minister for Foreign Affair for China notified the British Ministoi that a new Chinese customs tariff had been promulgated, and would come into force on February Ist. With the exception of certain articles which arc subject to special rates, the rates of duty ai)|x?ar to he identical with those of the interim schedule accepted by foreign delegations in 192(5. The Con mercia.l Secretary at Shanghai has 1 <*on instructed to make a detailed examination of the tariff and report any discrepancies. No reply, so far as he was aware, had lieen returned to the Note of the Chinese Foreign Minister. Mr Locker-Lampson states that Sir Miles Lampson’s visit to Nanking does not indicate recognition of the Nationa 1 Government, hut de jure recognition would he a necessary consequence of the signature of any treaty which might he concluded as a result of the negotiations which Sir Miles Lampson is now conducting.
