OBITUARY

An old and respected resident ol Hinni, 1 -Mrs Harriet Winter, passed away y esterdav at Westland Hispital, at the age ol 73 years. Ihe deceased was a widow, her husband having predeceased her some years. She was a native of New South Wales, and had resided in Westland over a long period of years. A family of four daughters (Mrs ,T. Shirley of Napier, Mrs T. Brough of Auckland. Mrs C. Stoop of Kimu. and Miss 1. Winter of Hokitika) and four sons (Arthur of Inglewood. bred and Herbert of Kokatahi. nnd George of Groymouth) are left to mourn their loss. The funeral take, place to-morrow afternoon.

Ono of tin 1 patients of the Mental Hospital. P. A. Nolan, aged oS years, v 1 11 ) was transferred to Hokitika from llie East Coast in 1913. died suddenly vesterday morning at the institution. Me as quiet and reserved, and generally in good health, making no complaint. He went about daily various ward duties, and regularly assisted with the laundry work. Yesterday he rose as usual, performed customary ward duties and partook of a hearty breakfast. According to custom he retired to the hack and had a habit of waiting in a nearby gravel pit till called. Not responding to the usual call, a warder went in search and found him dead by the roadside. There were no unusual circumstances, and no signs of anv struggle. His cap was still on his head, as he lay back on his hack. He had evidently expired very quietly. As a result of a postmortem by Hr Baird, a verdict of dentil from aortic disease and heart failure was returned at the inquest completed by the Coroner this forenoon.
