MOTOR GARAGE BURNT

STRATFORD, Dec. 18

At four this .morning, the Farmers Co-op Organisation Society motor garage was totally destroyed by fire. The flames had a good hold when discovered, and the Brigade could do nothing to save the building, which was an old wooden structure. About twenty cars wore in the building at the time. The building and stock were insured but the loss over insurance is estimated at £4,000.

FOUND DROWNED

GISBORNE, Dec. 18

.Matekana Horua, aged 12, a -Maori girl, subject to epileptic fits was found drowned in a creek at Rangitikia.

VISCOUNT HAMPDEN

DUNEDIN, Dec. 18

Viscount Hampden left this morning for Christchurch. He later proceeds to Wellington, Rotorua and Auckland, leaving for England early in February.

.MINISTER OF RAILWAYS

DUNEDIN, Dec. 18

-Mr Taverner (Minister for Railways and .Mayor) states he has definitely decided to continue his home in Dunedin. The matter of establishing Ministerial Offices in Dunedin and Auckland is receiving attention. The object was to enable Ministers in their own home centres more time there, also to enable them to keep in close touch with the business community, and to have a responsible officer in charge of the district in the Minister’s absence. Tavener intends to make a comprehensive tour of the North Island railways in the middle of next month and afterwards of the South Island.

DEAD IN CELL

PRISONER SUICIDES.

AUCKLAND, Dec. 18. Olaf Christian Karlson, aged 53, who was sentenced to twelve months yesterday for breaking and entering, was found dead in. his cell tin’s morning, with a severed artery.

A FIRE

CARTERTON, Dec. 18

A fire early this morning completely gutted premises owned by S. Temple’s estate and occupied by J. H. Russell, fish shop and restaurant. The brigade were quickly on the scene and a splendid water pressure enabled them to quelT the outbreak. Insurance is £6OO on the building and on the contents nothing.
