A LAD KILLED

AUCKLAND, Dec. 14. Hugh Alexander Canniioek, aged 16 was knocked down and killed by : motor car at AVestlield at 1(J o’clock last night, liis parents reside at Oneliunga. £2OOO FRAUD. AUCKLAND, Dec. 13. Edward John Samuel, middle-aged, a commission agent, as charged on IS counts of obtaining credit by fraud. The amount involved exceeds £2OOO. A representative of eight firms in the Auckland Province, gave evidence regarding the sale of bricks and timber to accused. In most cases no payment whatever had been made. Builders and others stated that accused sold them bricks and timber for which they paid him. Accused was committed to the ,Supreme Court for trial, hail of £SOO I using allowed. THEFT OF MONIES. AUCKLAND, Dec. 13. Victor William Crjjhniiigliam, for ten years employed by the Farmers’ Auctiomvrin Cov.. was remanded on hail on a charge of stealing £lOl os; other charges are pending. It is understood that a large amount is involved. TAT.TA GORGE INQUEST. WELLINGTON, Dee. 14. Evidence was given at the Taita Gorge fatality inquest to-day by the taxi driver, Sergeant. He said the car came round a corner in front of him. Witness did not stop hut swerved to the right. Before he knew what had happened, the car was over the hank. Prior to the accident witness had been driving on tin* correct side of the road. Witness was told lie was not obliged to answer any questions as to what liquor lie had during the night. The inquest was adjourned till tomorrow.

FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENT. AYATAI ATE, Dec. 14. AVilliam Alfred Charles Broad, aged 22. single, a grocer’s assistant, Geraldine. was killed in a collision with a motor lorry four miles from AYaimnto at seven o’clock last evening. Deceased was driving a car containing his father and mother, returning from a howling match at AYaimatc. 'flic car struck the lorry oil the bridge, continuing over the bridge through n wire fence and down a fourteen foot hank. Deceased’s neck was broken. His mother received a broken collarbone and father severe facial injuries. SOLICITOR. DECLARED BANKRUPT. AUCKLAND, Dec. 14. Hector Robert Malcolm, a solicitor, for whose arrest a. warrant is out, was adjudicated a bankrupt to-day by Justice Fraser. The petitioning creditor was John Arthur Aldorton, on whose account Malcolm held £450. A very large sum is involved in tlio bankruptcy. AYELLIXGTON SUPREME COURT. WELLINGTON, Dec. 14. In the Supreme Court to-day the following prisoners were sentenced by Air Justice MacGregor:—David Parkinson, on six charges of breaking, entering and theft, three years’ imprisonment: Ashton George Edwards, for theft of £127 as a servant of tlio AVellington Harbour Board, throe years probation : Thomas Will six and Charles Frederick Wa-lsli, for breaking, entering and theft, and Thomas Walsh theft, two years Borstal each; Alfred Griosedale, for dual voting, was ordered to nay costs ,C 1 Is. WELLINGTON, Dee. 14. When Ralph John Garrett, who pleaded guilty at Tailiapc to a charge of rape, appeared before Judge AlacGregor for sentence to-day, his Honour remarked it seemed that if he had pleaded guilty, and been properly defended, ho would have got off. Tlio Probation Officer at Tailmpe recommended probation, but the C' l own Prosecutor took the opposite view. His Honour remanded prisoner for sentence, saying be would have to consider the position further. Bail was refused. A NARROW ESCAPE. PALMERSTON N., Woe. 14. While passing Parewa, near Alarton, this morning a bullock jumped from the permanent way in front ol the engine of the South-bound Limited Express. The accident threw tlio front bogey wheels of the engine off the line, but fortunately the engine kept to the permanent way, though the train was travelling at a speed in tlio vicinity of forty-five miles an hour. When the train stopped it was only twenty yards from the Porewa bridge, spanning a gully. It bad a very close escape from serious accident.
