DISTINCTIONS CONFERRED
THE RENOWNED LEVELLERS. There was a large attendance at .the Princess Theatre last night to witness file initial performance of the Renowned Revellers, local amateurs, nv'omhed hv ML* Anne Duff, in praiseworthy effort, to assist, the funds of the Hokitika Fire Brigade. Tin* entertainment judged by the and the eneoros was an unquaLfic 1 success. The demands in the way of recalls caused an extension of the programme, the curtain not falling till after 11 o’clock. This- indicafio** of the approval of the audience, evidences the fact that the large company of performers did well. Sparkling music by the Black Hand Orchestra under the conduct orslii.p Mr A. T anvil, was supplied during the interludes, and much eu’oved. The oTiening vocal section was S'Migs of tb° Country in which Miss Bald as soloist sang ‘The Crown of the Year.'' very idea si ugly and was supported by a, girul chorus. Then followed a o'*"n--trv Dance nf the Ohl English period, and the. scene concluding with U’o chorus “Come to the Fair.” bright!.' sung. This was a capital opening an'' the entertainment secured a vorv popular beginming. Next 'came the Old English songs, “LaT-a-day” (Mis<Ada Lvuii) and “Down Vauxbal! Way” (Miss Anne Duff) supported bv a chorus of ladies and gentlemen in cost nines of the period. Again this effort pleased the audience, and recalls were dominant. Then came some tableaux vivants. A group of young ladies and gentlemen told a familiar tale of life in a pretty setting. First there was a scene, representing “A scandalous story:” next, “Secrets;” followed by “Anticipations;” the arrival of the beaux; after that. the “Meeting:’’ “The proposal:” and “The Old Old Storv.” came in proper sequence, and the wedding bulb were to ring. An outstanding item was the Living Picture. “3 he Imdv of the Picture” was Miss Duff. Alls* Alva Mclntosh was the Cavalier, and Miss Raid a charming soloist who wanders into a hall of fame to view the nieture gallery. . On vocal invitation the Lady of the Picture aim the Cavalier step forth and danc'- r stotilv measure—an altogether captivating number. The Musical Menu which followed was in numerous con 1 last, and it was done capitally hv a group of ladies and gentlemen, tb" attention to detail adding to the aO round effect. “Twice Hit-ten was a well told tale of the seaside, the com. <>dv being well bought out In' Mr I. Gilloolv The first half concluded with a Spanish Scene, in which the audience had the pleasure of . hearing Mr Arnold Perry in two vocal numbers. Mrs Harrison sa.n-r very pleasingly “In n Little Spanish Town.” supported by a gaily dressed chorus, and there w;n a spirited finale, with the Barcelona ballet. The curtain fell finally to vigorous rounds of applause. Mlie second part of the programme styled a revue, was written bv Mis l ' \ nee Duff, gntiiled “Fire.” It unfolded a story »f love and courtships, and the filial winning of a bride. There Wei -1 ' some vocal numbers, and much burlesque, including that of a darkle, wu Fire Brigade. 'File character of tlio play were done with a good deal of success. Air Bulpin was well placed ns the prosperous self-made Mr Jones under the constant tutelage of bis wife—Mario—sternly represented bv Mis- Pat Yareoe. Miss Duff was the captivating daughter, Angelina whom the hero had to win. Mr Paid Ronton was the potential hero and did remarkably well -in a difficult i.vip of character. The duet with Miss Duff was rendered very effectively. Miss Poppy Pollock again showed excellence in a slavey character, "bile Miss Nan Reid was an excellent- foil | sl summit. .Mr C. Evans was a very out of date Fire Chief and had a mutely hand to assist him. The muster of the men gave opportunities for much burlesque, which was not overdone. There was a very plensiiie vo,-ale finale to the revue in which the whole company assisted with operatic excerpts, which made a bright round off to the entertainment. Miss Gi;\se presided at the piano throughout the programme, a-erom-:i-*i'ving the several soloists and supplying the incidental music. Alias Anne Duff was the organiser and producer of the entertainment. and mac be complimented on bringing out <>-Mr>nce ol much additional latent talent. Mr D. J. ('Evans on behalf of the management, returned thanks for the patronage extended, and announced a repetition of the programme tonight at 8 o’dock. Prior to the entertainment the Alunieipn! Band played a short programme of selectionsoutside the Theatre.
