Serious, trouble has arisen at Port Ahuriri among the crows of Richardson and Co’s fleet, rendering the vessels idle and generally causing dislocation of the coastal trade at a time when it is particularly busy owing to so much wool being shipped to Napier.
The first indication of trouble came on Monday evening. Four vessels of the Richardson fleet had completed discharge or loading, and were ready to proceed to sea, when a dispute arose concerning the number of firemen necessary for manning the Tangaroa. which trades only to Wii'mn and ion river limits, under which there is no definite manning scale. However, the crews of the other vessels demanded that extra firemen be engaged tor tlic Tangaroa, as provided by the articles for coastal vessels.
At t'lie outset a general gathering (ire men from the Pukoko and Putiki. joined by a number of unemployed men, visited the Pnkcko. which was being worked by wate.rsiders. with whom they started trouble, dnriiw which one wharf labourer was assaulted. Eventually the disturbers passed on to the Tangaroa. and eight of them boarded the vessel, whose captain ordered them oil'. The command ivir ignored and the men lorced their «:i' to the engine-room.- where a tight ensue. and one of the seamen had his teeth smashed. Disgusting langua-m was used in the hearing of two lady passengers of the .vessel. Efforts to induce the firm ion to listen to reason and take the \ossel to sea were without avail. Throughout to-dav numerous conferences were held in unsueeo«sful endeavours to reach a settlement. The Wellington office of the union telegraphed instructing the men to tesume. but even this had no effect, The owners made an offer to place an extia nreman on the Tangama. after the other two vessels. Pukeko and Putiki. had been taken to sea. This was not agreed to. and the men went one further by demanding that another man be placed on the deck of the Tangaroa. as well as another fireman. It is difficult to determine exnoHv what is at the bottom of the trouble, but the suggestion is made that it was
