OVERSEER MILLNER’S REPORTS. SECONDARY HIGHWAYS. LAKE KAN I ICR I ROAD.

I have the honour to report upon the amount of work completed during the month erf November. Boucher’s Hill improvement, £ for C grant.—This work was commenced during the latter part of the month, and the clearing completed twelve feet in width over a distance of 800 links. The hillside cutting was commenced at peg "chains -50 links hut only (lie surface was removed to the top ol the gravel, an average depth of 5 feet and o feet 0 inches in width, over a distance o'! 200 links, the amount of material removed being 125 cubic yards.

MAINTENANCE. Slip Hill clearing.—This work was continued, very had country being met with for the whole length excavated. The old retaining wall which had been gradually subsiding, blocking watertables, and encroaching nn the roadway was removed and rebuilt over a distance of 130 links, but portions of the wall will require further attention as the pressure from the hillside appears too great for ordinary stone work to withstand. The centre portion ol 42 feet in length where moving pug was causing trouble, was cribbed with silver pine timber an average height of nine feet, and this portion appears to be holding up against the heavy pressure. The material removed amounted to 528 cubic yards of pug, and surface soil 84 cubic' yards ol stone and 08 cubic yaids of stone rel>uill in the new wall. Lake Kanieri road was dragged a distance of 40 chains, rolled with the ten ton roller a. distance of GO chains, motor worn holes repaired over a dis lance of three miles, and a coat ol gravel 0 inches thick and 8 feet in width placed oil the road from McKays Creek to the foot of Slip Mill. Repairs absorbed 101 cubic yards ol gravel.

LOWER KO KATA lIT ROAD TO Ale ARTHUR ROAD. Heslan’s Creek Bridge.—This bridge which was one 18 feet span platform bridge and unsafe for traffic was demolished and two courses of 30 inch diameter eonereto pipes laid on longitudinal sills, were placed in position in the waterway, Idled in round and ovei pipes with spoil and gravel to the level of the roadway, a stone retaining wall being built at each end of filling which is 8 feet in depth from the road surface. Each course of pipes is 24 feel in length, containing 8 pipes in each course, the sills are 8 x 3 inner heart of rimu, amounting to 00 superficial feet of timber. , The quantity of spoil and gravel used in filling amounts to 118 yards and 12 cubic yards of stone. Concrete pipe culvert Cropp’s road contains seven eight inch diametei pipes laid on oxl longitudinal sills to replace a small defective covered culvert, the completed culvert is 21 feel in length and four cubic yards ol gravel was used for filling.

.MAINTENANCE. Repairs were elFected to motor worn holes over a distance ol five miles, absorbing 10.) cubic yards of gravel and 10 cubic yards of gravel was placed on tbo AO inch diameter concrete pipe culvert below Harris Creek Bridge No. I. A short portion of Lower Tvokatabi road was graded to remove the grass growth for two feet in width on each side, to allow drainage to run off, between Diedrichs Stockyard and White Crock Bridge. No. 2 lorry was used with the large rood grader for tins purpose over a distance of 30 chains. Later in the month the grader drawn bv the tractor was used to open tin* water-tables and remove the outer accumulation of debris and growth on each side of road over a distance ol bd chains.' A quantity of gravel was carted to replenish the roadside dumps over a distance of fire miles, th° amount totalling HSO cubic yards. Ibe eastern side of road was cleared of willow growth for fifteen feet in width ami dol) links in length. The roadsul • drain near the. terminus of the Highway was cleaned and deepened from its' outlet to Smith's Creek toward Camelhack Bond a distance el ‘IOO links.

UPPER KOKATAHI BOAT). No. I Duck Creek Bridge.—The defective Bx 3 decking, and hand • ing were removed and replaced with seventy-four 14 and ten 20 feet by S x 4 heart of rimu planking, and two 20 feet 4 x d. two 11 feet and ten 8 feet 4 x ‘I ; ten 8 feet 4x4; ten 8 feet 4 x d; two 20 feet 4 x 15 and two 14 feet 4 and 2, totalling 3,739.4 superficial feet In addition a defective stringer 20 feet in length by 16 x 10 was removed and replaced with one 20 feet by 16 x 10 heart of rimu stringer—3oo superficial feet. No. 2 Duck Creek Bridge. 88ft.— The whole of the decking and handrailing were removed and decking replaced with 14 feet and 20 feet 8 x 4 heart rtf rimu timber but not spiked in position. In addition three faulty stringers were removed and replaced with *l6 x 10 3-22 feet heart of rimu stringers. 880 superficial feet mid decking exclusive of railing 6.621 superficial feet. MAINTENANCE. Lower Kokatahi road was graded from the 10 mile to the 14 mile peg. the Austin grader drawn by the tractor being used for the purpose. Four

detective stringers and Bxß decking were removed and replaced with 8 x 4 planking on a six Teel pin Morin culvert 400 links beyond Hladiers Head. Timber used 12 x !) 1-7 252 feet 8 x 'I 11-11 410.8 super feet. Motor worn boles were repaired over a distance ol one mile, 50 cubic yards of gravel being used for the purpose. In addition 00 cubic yards of gravel was carried out to renew roadside dumps between the 10 mile and 11 mile pegs.
