VETERAN'S DEATH. (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, Dec. 10. William Henry Bagnall, aged 83, died yesterday. He migrated from Prince Edward Island, Canada, in 1861 (taking six months to make the passage in a sailer). His father was a member of the Legislature there. William was a member of the firm of Bagnall Bros., large timber millers at. Turua. He retired' in 1917. He is survived by a widow and family of five including Hon W. Garfield Bagnail, Tongan Minister of Finance. HEATH FROM INJURIES. AUCKLAND, Dec. 10. John Sanderson died last night from burns and other injuries resulting from a petrol explosion on the launch Huanui at Nelson Street wharf on Thursday. SUDDEN DEATH. AUCKLAND, Dec. 10. While visiting a patient yesterday afternoon, Miss Mary Rateliffe, aged 71, of 34 Wynyard Road, Mbunt Eden, collapsed at Auckland Hospital and died an hour later. MOTOR CYOLTST INJURED CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 10: While riding a motor cycle on Saturday evening S. Thackwell, single, .colTded with a motor car and was hospital led unconscious with head wounds. His condition to-day was improving. INQUEST EVIDENCE. ' WELLINGTON, December 10: The adjourned inquest on Joseph O’Neill, who died as the result of injuries received when a taxi in which ho was riding went over a bank at Taitai .Gorge in the early hours of the morning of December 3rd, was continued before Mr J. H. Salmon to-day. A mechanic stated there was nothing wrong with the engine or brakes and tlie tires were good. Joseph Enoch Horsfall, custodian of the oil tanker, Otokia, said O’Neill and a taxi driver visited him on the night of the second. O’Neill had been drinking a bit but the taxi driver was all right. The driver,whom be had known in Auckland as Sergeant, brought some fish and chips and a bottle of whisky from the ear and each man had a drink. The three returned to the taxi where.more liquor was consumed and it was decided to go for a drive along the llutt road. They made two stops and had more liquor, but witness could not swear definitely whether the driver had a drink on these occasions. They stopped at Quinn s Post where O’Neill had five 'drink*. Witness saw Sergeant, with a glass in his hand and heard him say, “ Make it light.” At this stage the inquest was adjourned till to-morrow. TROTTING HANDICAPPED. HAWERA, December 10. Hawora Trotting Club has appointed Mr C. E. Goosman, of Hamilton, as haiulicapper vice George Paul, junior, resigned, owing to his appointment to the Metropolitan Club. TWO BOYS DROWNED. PALMERSTON N., Dec. 10. A drowning fatality occurred at Tangimoana at the moutli of the Rangitikoi river yesterday, the victims being Russell Ernest Burgess, aged 14, and Robert Parker, aged 19, sons of Rongotea farmer. Both were swimming in the river when Burgess got into difficulties. Parker went to his assistance but sank on reaching him. Another man, Zuppicicli, pluckily plunged in fully clothed and succeeded in getting hold of one lad, but he had to disengage himself. He then made a second fruitless attempt. The bodies were recovered later.
