WHALING SEASON
OPERATIONS IN THE NORTH. AUCKLAND, December fi. Summer whaling operations in the north practically closed down last Saturday.'No fewer than 21) whales, which proved to he in prime condition, were secured and towed to the boiling-down works at Whangamumu. The fast up-to-date launch, Ngaire, which was built in Auckland, has proved an unqualified success when chasing whales. The whales with their calves, which an* seen off Cape Brett at this pciiod of the year, are travelling southwards. The next whaling season commences about June Ist next. That is when the whales are returning northwards. Captain Cook, the manager of the Pay of Islands \vhaling station, has taken the whaling steamer, Hananui, hack to Russell where she will remain at anchor until about the middle ol May next.
