Tim “Times” comes] •■undent at Rome states an hitherto unknown light on ancient architecture lias been furnished. I)\- excavations ai Herculaneum, where it was revealed that Imu.-es were twostoried, contrasting with single storied at Pompeii-. The upper rooms were reached by wooden staircases. Many contained beautifully carved wooden furniture, excellently preserved. Digging along the road leading seawards, disclosed the entrances lo several patrician villas, but there are no traces of human remains. 'I lie inhabitants, presumably escaped in boats. Many artistic finds, including statues of Moreurv. Diana and Apollo, terracotta and coloured glass ornaments and a wooden press for crushing olives, which are identical with those used to-day. The authorities have decided to leave o\ei\tliing where they were found, to enable the visitor to envisage the daily tile of Hie inhabitants.
