A FARTHING DAMAGES

'There* was a sensational ending to the lihoi action brought- by William Cooper Ilohbs, who figured in the Mister A case. Hobbs sued the Liverpool “ Evening Express” in connection with a sketch of his lilt*, imputing dishonesty. The jury intimated it desired to find (for defendants. Lord Ilewart gave*, judgment to defendants, on the ground that plaintiff hail been found a verdict: lor a larthing. lie announced the documents would he impounded and sent to the* 1 ulilii Prosecutor. In the closing stage Lord Ilewart said: “An interesting point arises.. Tim jury has twice expressed the opinion that there must be a verdict for the defendants if the law allows and tin* most damage tin*, plaiulill has suffered is a farthing. In connection with the printed words that are delamntorv, the law presumes there is some damage. If that presiuution is to he refuted, it may he the plaintiff appears ohviouslv so worthless a person that- if is impossible lie can suffer damage from any libel. Mr Birkett said: “1 can conceive such a case that even a verdict ol farthing would he judgment for defendants. 1 have paid into.a pound, which is 10s 11 :|d too much.” .Justice Ilewart: “I gather you ask for judgment for defendants with costs.” lie then gave judgment accordingly. The jury formally awarded Ilohbs a farthing damages.
