POLO PONIES FOR INDIA
TO BE BRED IN AUCKLAND PROVINCE. AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. Brooding of polo ponies for export to India is one novel use to which an Englishwoman, Mrs Alberta McLean, will put her station of 2500 acres at .. hangapoa, near Auckland. Mrs Mclyean, who is a native of Hampshire, paid her first visit to the Dominion in 1922, and was so impressed with the country that she returned again in 1924 and purchased over 1009 acres of land at Whangapoa. She was a passenger from Southampton by the Rotorua: “I cahled from England to my agents to secure another 1500 acres, and 1 am not yet aware that this has been done,” Mrs'McLean stated. “M.v land overlooks the Hauraki Gulf, and I consider it carries the finest poliutukawa groves in the Dominion.” Mrs McLean is enthusiastic about the breeding of polo ponies, and si Brought to New Zealand with her aboard the Rotorua a grey Arab mare and a very valuable Indian stallion. . The stallion is unique so far as New I Zealand is concerned. Its body is the | colour of golden sand, and it has a black tail and black mane. Mrs Mc- ■ Lean purchased him at a fair in India., and she believes he comes from the stables of a high Indian prince. These > horses will he used for breeding ptiri poses. | “The polo players in India have the I greatest difficulty in securing the right tv pc of ponies.’’ Mrs McLean stated. “Many of the ponies come from Australia. hut apparently they are not being bred in great enough numbers. I intend to breed polo ponies on my station and export them to India, and I am confident of the success of the venture.”
