GARAGE BURNT

Heavy damage was done by a fire which broke out in business premises of A. E. McDonald, at Opunake, at 1.30 this morning. A corrugated iron building sub-divided into garage, coal shed and office was completely destroyed. Three motors trucks, stocks ol coal, coke, oil and cement were also lost, 'l’lie damage is estimated at between ,C 2,000 and C 3,00(). The building was situated on the main road, about a quarter ol a mile lrom the centre of the town, but as no water supply was available nothing could he done to check the flames, which had a good hold when the outbreak was discovered. Insurances C 12.3 on stock and C3OO on building.

MILL HAND KILLED

A middle-aged, married man. Jack Sorenson, was killed while working in the hush two miles from Bask s mill, at Kopaki. this morning. L appears that Sorensen, a mill employee, was working some distance from his mates and was engaged in breaking out a heavy log. which fell on the deceased, inflicting a mortal injury to his head. Nobody witnessed the accident but the man’s mates came tip iminedialeL the log rolled and found Sorensen had met with instantaneous death. The body is being brought to To Tvniti to-day, where an inquest will be held. Ihe deceased belonged to Auckland.

POWER- STATION READY. WELLINGTON. Dee. 0. Waikaremoana Bower Station will fie ready for turning on the water in a fortnight. The official opening will probably be early in the New Year. I be original contract date was June 1929.
