WELLINGTON, December 5

The Legislative Council met at 2.40 immediately after the official opening ceremony to-dav. Only formal business was done. Leave of absence for the remainder of the session was '■ranted Sir James Allen, on account of illness, and similar leave by GovernorGeneral’s message was granted to lion. Collins. Sir T. Mackenzie, and Hon. J. A. Ilanan.

Hon. Gow gave notice to move an Address-in-Kcply to-morrow. The Council rose at 2.50 p.m. until 2.;i() p.m. on Thursday. In the Legislative Council, the Gov-ernor-General read the Speech to hotli Houses in the presence of a brilliant

assemblage

THE HOUSE. On returning to the House, Air Ansoll gave notice of intention to move a respectful address to lie presented to his Excellency in reply to his Excellency’s speech. Sir Joseph Ward gave notice to move an amendment that his Excellency’s advisers do not possess the confidence of the House.

Hon. .1. G. Coates intimated they would go on with the debate on Thursday. Hr suggested that the speakers should lie limited to one from each party, and so conclude by Friday or Saturday.

To this Sir Joseph "Ward agreed, but said if the House did not agree to ceitain legislation he was prepaied to bring down this session, another session would be necessary in Febiuaiy. j.r Holland gave no notice of amendment, nor did lie sav whether he would agree to restrict the debate. The House rose at 2.55 p.m. on Thursday.
