CHURCH AFIRE

AUCKLAND. December 1
The Christ Church, at Ellerslie, an Anglican Church possessing some of the most beautiful stained glass windows in Auckland, was considerably damaged by fire to-night, the northern wall and eastern apex of the roof suffering most. With the exception of minor cracks in one pane, the windows were untouched.
The painters had been engaged during the afternoon in burning off old paint. ’JJie brigade made an excellent’ save.
The church is insured for 92000 in the Diocesan Church Insurance Fund. The vicar and other church workers saved the church plate and other valuable property.

The steamer Canadian Highlander, which left Napier for Auckland oil Monday night, lost a propeller blade about an hour and a-half alter her departure, and her speed was consequently reduced to eight knots. The vessel, which was due at Auckland late to-night, is now not expected before noon to-morrow. Efforts will be made to effect repairs at the wharf, but the steamer may have to lie docked lor this purpose.
SAFE STOLEN BY BURGLARS
PALMERSTON N.. Dec. 3.
Burglars entered the tobacconist shop of J. Christie, Rangitikei Street. On Sunday night and removed bodily, a two hundredweight safe containing a large sum. in addition to a large quantity of goods. Ingress was gained by smashing a panel from the door and removing the bolt.
