Till-: number of district works going Toward in various pans of the Eiertoralc, to which prominence lias been given in these columns of late, suggests Unit llie promises giu'ii last session to the Mourner for Westland, are being oacked up by the expenditure of the votes with very litLle lost time. The early move with regard to the Great South Road is to us most satisfactory. Although the undertaking has been discredited in some quarters, and during the recent election proceedings were relerred to in one quarter as something of a joke upon the constituency, the lads are demonstrating llial the Government and the ox-Aleiubcr were most

We trust that there will Ikj lioarly co-opera Lion on the pari <d the coaimiiiiiiy generally to sec this highly inipoi’taiit won; pn.si.od oil. It is a matter for the local body in particular to promote in every way possible. When me present political Situation i.s clarilied and the Hon .Minister for Pit lie Works is announced, it would he well to got in touch with the .Minister and engage his attent.on with the undertaking I’ioin the very outset. In tile ordinary course it liad been arranged Unit .Mr Seddon was to escort .Mr K. hi. \\ 1 11 i;i ms over the route, hut political late played one of its tricks—.Mr Seduoii is not in Parliament and .Mr Williams will be giving up hi.s seats of ■otliee according to general expectations, it will he the duty of Mr O’Brien therefore, to take up this matter where Mr Seddon was forced to drop it, and engaging the attention of the new Minister urge the carrying out of the programme which had been arranged—a programme of the greatest promise and satisfaction for South Westland and the district as a whole. Regarding other public works in the district it is pleasing to note that the votes are being authorised and the works put in hand. It is very gratifying indeed to find the oridging programme for the southern highway, as well as the widening of the road between Wailio and Weheka, l>eing taken up by the authorities. There are tangible evidence of the good spade work done, and the district has every reason to he pleased with such tangible results. II is clear, as was mentioned in this paper not so very long ago, that within the year, as a result of the new votes obtained for Westland, very important improvements are to lie made to the roads of the district within the coming year. The bridges alone Lo he erected, are going to he a great boon to traffic.
