ADVERTISING THE COAST

AIR EIUC JAMES’ EFFORT. At a recent meeting of the Dunedin Gardening t hin, says the "Otag< Daily Times,” the subject for i..evening was an unusual one, being an exliihition by coloured lantern slides of the lakes and Southern Alps, including the Ilaast Pass and Franz Josef Glacier by Guide Erie .iame.j, of Wanaka. The lecturer gave an interesting description of the accessibility of tin IJaast Pass and its surroundings foi holiday-makers, starting at Pembroke ilieuce to Alaturoa at the head of the lake by launch. I!y maps and pictureel' the chief points of interest on the tra -h, he proceeded to the coast, and thence along the coast to the Franz Josef Glacier. In explaining the features of the track lie dealt fully with the bush and vegetation. He also touched on the animal life which consisted of deer in plenty, native game and birds. Along the Ilaast Pass wore large tracks of mountainous country not traversed, and there was a good opening for the ardent explorer. The whole country is full of lakes and waterfalls, and the Ilaast River has the name of being the grandest and wildest in New Zealand. He also gave a short description of the minerals of the districts. The passes at the head of Lake Wakatipu then claimed the attention of the speaker, and the access to the Fran/, Josef Glacier from 'the Canterbury and Hokitika side.

Air H. T Trcvonn, in moving a vole of thanks, complimented the lecturer mi the clear and lucid way the mountain district had been explained.
