MOTOR BOATING
‘SPEED RACING ON HOKITIKA RIVER.
Much public interest was shown in the Regatta on Saturday afternoon, and a large crowd assembled to see the trials of the speed boats. No doubt the presence of two competitors from Christchurch attracted special interest, as also did Mr L. Gooch’s new speed boat, “Miss Kvinrude,” a sister-boat to one which has established records at tlie Canterbury Club’s regattas.
In spite of the weather conditions the officials carried out all arrangements during the morning, and when the weather cleared everything was ready for the afternoon’s sport. Preliminary trials were run by all boats over the course to assist the bnndieanpors, and while there were big differences in the speed of the various boats, the system of rehandicapping after each round, made the racing interesting. ,It is anticipated that tho public interest aroused In the new sport will result in several more boats being ready for the next regatta which may permit of class racing, which from the spectators’ point of view would make more interesting racing, there not being the great discrepancy in speed in class racing between the various boat 1 . ,competing, as was shown in racing.. i. . ; ; ? ■ : • On Saturday evening at Mclntosh’s Club Rooms a number of officials and competitors assembled for the presentation of prizes. The President, Dr Buchanan,-, congratulated Air Gooch, who was unavoidably absent, on winning the Mclntosh Cup and the L.Y.A.. Cup, and, expressed satisfaction at the successful running off of the various events, and the good sportsmanship shown throughout. Mr J. J. Mclntosh presented the Mclntosh Cup, and Mr H. M. Coulson ' presented sf he L.V.A. Cup, each expressing the hope that the day s racing would he the forerunner of a number of similar events, and looking forward to the time when the number of entries would warrant class racing and attract, competition from outside Clubs.
Air McLean (Commodore of the Canterbury Outboard Motor Club' complimented tho Club on the day’s racing, and suggested that the Club should hold ft series of eliminating trials to select a boat to’ represent the Club at the. Canterbury Championship Regatta and the New Zealand Championships. He offered a hearty welcome to visit the Canterbury Club at any time, and thanked members for hospitality extended to himself and Mr McMillan on their visit. .. , V v.-.i
Others speakers were Messrs J. N. Robinson, F. J. Andrews, C. D. Hart, G. Raine, and J. IV. Morris'. A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to tho donors of trophies for the various events and all officials who assisted and it }vas felt that' the .genuine publ •' interest shown -augured well for. the future outlook df the Club.
During- the course of the first race the Cheerio and Attaboy developed en-igma--trouble and bad to retire, and a collision between the .Playmate and Lockwood resulting in,a broken plank in the bow'of the PlAvmate, forced its withdrawal- from the remaining races. ( This accident was particularly ijnforturiate as it prevented Air Andrews defending bis title to the Cup. Yesterday afternoon at Lake Kanierthe visitors were entertained by Club members, and after a series of bandit a' races Dr Buchanan won a life-preserv-ing jacket presented by Mr McLean of Christchurch'. The visitors were greaijv impressed by the possibilities oi Lake Kanieri for racing, and said tbev : would do their best to induce otherto come across for the next regatta.
