ANGLO-CATHOLICTSM

“The extreme unpopularity of 1 Anglo-Catholieism,' merits the gravest consideration, for it must he apparent to the most reluctant understanding that, however admirable the personal devotion of the ‘Anglo-Catholic’ clergy may be—and that it is in many eases most admirable, no man cognisant of the facts of parochial life in England to-day can doubt—if they have created against themselves such a dead-weight of suspicion and dislike a.s seemed to be disclosed in Parliament, their influence for good must he largely paralysed, and the position of the Church as a witness to the unseen Verities of Religion must be gravely weakened. Nor {•;in any candid man, however, firmly persuaded of his ‘Anglo-Catholic’ opinions, fail to admit the obligation df examining humbly and honestly the reasons which have created in the minds of England people so formidable an alienation. For though obstinate in their prejudices and often mistaken in their judgments, the English are a just people, and they would not without reason refuse to do homage to sincerity and self-sacrifice even though associated with beliefs and practices which they themselves disliUed.—Dr. Hensley Henson, Bishop in Durham, writing in his Diocesan magazine “ The Bishoprick,” with regard to -he Prayer Book debate, the Anglo-Catho-lics and the Disestablishment issue.
