N.Z. TIMBERS
USE IN HOSTEL BUILDING. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, Nov. 29. In reference to the‘architects statement re hostel from Timaru, Mr Bush (Ciiairman of the Main Trunk Timber Protection Guild) stated in an interview there to-day that he wished to make certain matters plain. There was no mistake in stating Oregon was used on the job as he knew at least ten thousand feet of flooring had already arrived, a member of the .Guild having verified the fact, while another member had also stated that the order to him for ten thousand feet of 0.8. lining had been cancelled, and that he had been informed Oregon was to bo used in its place. As to tho statement that New Zealand timbers could not have been available in tho time, that was totally wrong, because the present known requirements of flooring and lining could have been supplied immediately a hundred times over. A million feet of seasoned matai or rimu flooring or lining were ready for forwarding. We are glad to' have tho assurance that New Zealand timbers are to be used in the building of main hostels, said Mr Bush, and are grateful to the Prime Minister for having used his influence in that respect. Mr Bush wished to point out that in his letter he had not referred to the main hostel specifically, but to work in hand, and the fact deduced that the statement of a builder that Oregon had been taken to the job was accurate. The Guild’s protest against the use of foreign timber for this particular job was thoroughly justified, said Mr Bush.
