DYKES BURST
PORTION OF BELGIUM FLOODED

Violent storms caused the Scheldt to overflow at high tide, bursting three dykes, and inundating the greater part of the villages of Moerseke and Grombergen, where the railway station was submerged to a depth of six feet. Many inhabitants were forced to abandon their houses. Railways, roads and low lying meadows over a wide area art flooded five to six feet. Pupcl river broke its dyke and the water damaged several brick factories at Terliaegen, threatening sixty workmen’s cottages. Considerable damage was done at Antwerp, water flooding warehouses and also first floors of houses. At Saint Anno the river Netho overflowed and submerged tho waterworks at Waclhcm resulting in a shortage of drinking water. At Antwerp, tho Governor has appealed for troops to assist in strengthening the dykes, several of which <ue seriously threatened. Hundreds were rushed in motor lorries to build up Caloo dyke at Scheldt. There is grave fears that to-night’s flood tide will renew the floods.
