ENCOURAGING PASTORAL PURSUITS

At a meeting of tin* Australian -Mercantile and Land Coy. .Mi' 11. R. Cairo presiding, called attention to two very important events emanating from two widely separated points on the political horizon, which tend to encourage hope. Statesmen were beginning to beiognise the pastoral industry’s value to Australia. He referred to .Mr McCormick's commission to report on the Queensland pastor.l industry and Mr Bruce's commission of pastoral inquiry thro ghoul Australia. The report of the Queensland Commission betokens an earnest desire to deal with the vast areas of crown lands in a statesmanlike manner. Mr Cairo referred appree'at vely to the remarks in the reports of both commissions regarding the great increase in costs of production, notably of wages, and qtinted a paragraph in that connection from the Federal Comnrssion report. lie regretted the (‘ll'orts to interest pas torn list s in a well-consul ered scheme of scientific research have not met with the success deserved lor there still was a wide field of research in the direction of reinfrndurtion and restoration oif drought-resksting plants, grasses, eradication of noxious weeds, animals, parasites and treatment In prevention of diseases.'
