FIRE ALARM
OUTBREAK ON GIBSON QUAY.
An alarm of fire was given this afternoon at 1.30 o’clock. The causo of the alarm was an outbreak of fire in the back yard of Messrs Paterson, Michel and Co.’s premises hounding on Gibson Quay. A quantity of rubbish had been set fire to and the northerly wind blowing had apparently sent the burning material into a luxuriant growth of honey suckle, etc., that was almost fence high, with the result that the fire ran along thefence, assuming somewhat dangerous proportions and causing a large volume of smoke. The Fire Brigade and a largo crowd soon gathered, a line of hose with a good pressure soon getting the outbreak under, without any damage, except to a portion of the fenco. Hie danger of tile outbreak was further augmented by the corner of the Harbour Board’s good shed on the wharf being found to have caught fire on one corner, apparently from a travelling spark, and everything being dry as tinder. A couple of buckets of water was sufficient to remove the danger.
