Held up by footpads in the city, William Daniels, aged 42, was shot in the arm, and robbed of 30s.
DANGEROUS CRIMINAL.
GAOLED FOR FIVE YEARS
SYDNEY, November 17
William Smiley, twenty-six, was .sentenced to five years’ penal servitude for causing bodily harm to two men.
TWO BROTHERS DROWNED
SYDNEY, November 19
While sailing in Botany Bay, George Hornier, aged 18, lost, his balance and fell overboard. His brother, Albert, aged 21, dived to his assistance. The third member of the party was unable to manage the skiff and the brothers disappeared before he reached them.
THE TANGO MARU
THURSDAY ISLAND, Nov. 19
The remainder of the wet wool in the holds of the Tango Mara was removed. The water is being kept under control and with the arrival of more pumps, it is hoped shortly to refloat the vessel.
A PECULIAR AFFAIR,
MELBOURNE, November 19,
A girl, aged 18, unidentified, was found on the beach at Mentone. She was lying iface downwards in the sand near the edge. The girl was suffering from tlie effects of a- drug and is still in a state of coma. The police are unable to discover anything about her.
ANTARCTIC WHALE FISHING
AN IMPORTANT INDUSTRY
(Received this day at 8.30. a.m.) ADELAIDE, Nov. 19.
Addressing Rotarians, Mr 0. T. Madigan commented on the economic importance of the Antarctic whale fishing whales is being explored by Norwegians. An international agreement was required to prevent the extinction of whales. The terrific polar winds might some day be harnessed for power. Australia should send another expedition to follow up the work done fourteen years ago and to claim the land flagged then, though colonisation might prove a delicate question since France could claim bounty on certain lands discovered long ago.
