THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Tun Political Situation,
The Prime Minister, perforce, must now consult the remnant of his Cabinet as to the course he is to pursue. Presumably lie will either call Parliament together forthwith and inrite a vote of members, or else, in view of the signal defeat of his party, place his resignation at once in the hands of the Governor-General. The majority of the Independents will undoubtedly support Sir Joseph Ward, and it may easily he that a fusion of the more progressive Reformers with the United Party will give the Liberal veteran a definite majority in the House. In any case, we should expect Labour to support Sir Joseph AA ard in preference to Mr Coates. That a readjustment of parties must occur is quite obvious, and out of it we anticipate the formation of a- stable progressive Government. The alternative of course, is a dissolution and another appeal to the constituencies. —Lvttelton Times.
