All Saints Sale of Work is to take place m the Soldiers’ Hall on Wednesday next, opening at 2 p.m. Various dainty and attractive articles will he on sale, and should meet with a ready disposal. Those concerned with the organising of the bazaar have worked hard to assure its success and so the results should prove very satisfactory.
In Wellington Central there Were 12,635 names ou the roll and the number of votes recorded was 11,268 (ineluding the informal votes) so that of the 12635 only 1367 did not vote on Wednesday. According to the official list Wellington Central has 672 absent voters 109 postal voters and 253 seamen in all 1035. so that only 332 names on the roll remain unaccounted for—truly a remarkable record for a metropolitan electorate.
A studious correspondent writes us pointing out that Air O’Brien’s total at the polling announced on Wednesday night, 1324. adds up 13. Likewise Air Soddou’stotal as announced, 4081, adds up 13. The correspondent considers the coincidence interesting enough for record. At the same time it should bo noted that what was unlucky in one instance was lucky in another. Air O’Brien has no occasion to quarrel with 13.
The death was recorded on Wednesday last. November 14th. ol Airs Bevan, widow of the late Air John Levan, of Sale Street, Hokitika. Deceased was a former well known resident of the town for many years, leaving the district some years ago. She took a great interest in the Hokitika Horticultural Society. Deceased leaves one son. Air C. J. (lory, of the Bank of New Zealand, Alilton, and one daughter. Airs J. Cunningham, of Christchurch.
An inquest was held in the Miners’ Hall. Blackball;' on Friday morning, inquiring into the death of the late Henry Chilton (President of the Blackball Miners’ Union). The verdict of the Coroner was as follows: “ Unit deceased was killed by a fall of coal, and that no blame is attachable to the management or men working the place. I think that-the management should take full responsibility for ensuring that all safety precautions should be carried out.”
The official scrutiny of the rolls in connection with the Westland election will take place on Monday, commencing at 10 o’clock. The official count follows. At the latter absent and postal votes, together with the seamen and declaration votes will be included in the official count, and a declaration of th l " poll will follow. Both candidates will bo represented by scrutineers at these proceedings. The scrutiny and counting will occupy some considerable time and extend over a few days. Mr R. Cox. the Returning Officer, will preside over the proceedings.
Mr G. O. Black, United member for Motueka, is a native of Reefton. Since I90;} Air Black has been sessional committee clerk in the House of Representatives as clerk to the Goldfields and Mines Committee and of the Public Accounts Committee since 19*20. besides being attached to special select committees that have dealt with the main questions before Parliament. In recent voars lie has been connected with the Motor A chicles Bill Committee. the Rural Credits Commission Report Committee. the Intermediate Rural Credit Bill Committee and the Joint Samoan Petition and Inquiry Committee. All’ Black, who is twentilour years of age, is the youngest member of the House.
'Hie pioneer members of St. (olumkilie’s Convent of Alert-,v. Hokitika, will to-morrow afternoon he tendered a presentation from their many expupils and friends in lionoui ol the Golden Jubilee of their arrival from Ireland to take up their beiicficieiit work of education on the West Coast. The function will be held at 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s Club Rooms, when there will be doubtless a large gathering for the occasion, including visitors from various parts of the West Coast. It is interesting to note that the majority of the Sisters who arrived in Hokitika half a century ago are still alive to carry on their good work, and they have been the recipients of congratulations on the Jubilee from all parts of New Zealand.
